Badminton in Kansas, A History- Courtesy of Overland Park Athletic Club

The Athletic Club of Overland Park offers a wide variety of sports from the games you played in grade school like volleyball and basketball, to other less traditional choices like racquetball, handball, squash, table tennis, and badminton. Actually in the case of badminton, maybe the proper phrase would be “more traditional.” Although it has only been an Olympic sport since 1992, Badminton can be traced all the way back to mid-18th century India where its ancestor (a game called Battledore and Shuttlecock) was played by the British military families. When the military officers retired they took the sport back to England, where the rules were refined and it was eventually given its name by the Duke of Beaufort of the...

Ladies put your hands up! (For Kansas City handball that is…)

Play Kansas City handball like a Girl… “You play ball like a GIRL” !! Why yes I do- and I’m proud of it! I am a girl. A strong, athletic, fit, competitive girl! I have been put on assignment to build women’s courts sports here at The Athletic Club. I’ve even been given a fancy title “Ambassador of Women’s Court Sports.” I being the “girl” that I am wanted to make sure I knew the sports I was talking about. Volleyball- check, Basketball- Check, Racquetball- Check, hmmm— badminton…table tennis…squash… all are kind of obscure to me but I am ready to give them a try. Handball… no way- I need my hands. The Benefits of Overland Park Zumba and Dance Aerobics

April 11th is World Parkinson’s Day! Zumba and other dance aerobics are great alternative workouts for those of us who’s bodies can’t withstand constant pounding or heavy lifting. The Athletic Club of Overland Park Zumba Instructors are here of you! Call us today for more information. Visit www.parkinson.org for more info! Parkinson’s disease is a progressive degenerative disease. It is characterized by tremors and shaking- typically in hands, arms and/or legs. Balance is often affected. The disease is caused by the breakdown of nerve cells that produce dopamine, the neurotransmitter that assists in smooth, controlled muscle movements. As dopamine decreases the nerve cells begin to misfire and cause jerky, shaky, labored movements. The disease affects all muscle groups in the...

The Road to Health and Wellness

The way to wellness has many paths. The widest and most traveled roads are Exercise and Diet. Anyone who has taken a vacation from either can recognize the importance of consistency and diligence. The Athletic Club also recognizes that while a calorie by any other name would burn the same, there is a difference in the quality of the calories consumed. The human body is bombarded on a daily basis by pollution, radiation, and toxic chemicals. Some we cannot avoid like cell phones, computers, air quality, or artificial lights. Some we can control like diet sodas, processed foods, hydrogenated oils and refined sugar and flour. The organic Food Movement began meagerly in the early 1900’s. In the 1940’s, pesticides and...

Gym Membership at the Athletic Club of Overland Park Creates Community

Gym membership at the Athletic Club of Overland Park provides its members with a Kansas City gym that not only offers state of the art athletic equipment, but also creates a sense of community amongst the members—an important facet of gym membership that so many other athletic clubs in the Kansas City Metro Area lack. The Athletic Club of Overland Park is a gym that has years of experience in putting its members first. In a large metropolitan area, like Kansas City, it is easy for members to feel overwhelmed and intimidated by the giagantic coporate athletic chains and monstrous, imposing gyms, luckily, however, the Overland Park Athletic Club has been able to create an environment that is supportive and...

Wallyball at The Athletic Club of Overland Park is Making a Comeback!

What in the world is Wallyball? It’s actually a fun, fast paced game similar to volleyball, only played in a walled court instead of in a traditional volleyball space. The walls and ceiling become part of the game, so you know this game’s gotta be fun. The sport was developed in 1985 and gained much popularity throughout the 80s and early 90’s. Sadly for Wallyball, as racquet court sports slowly began moving out of most fitness clubs the sport of Wallyball also faded into obscurity. We have not forgotten, and so Wallyball at the Athletic Club of Overland Park is back! The club maintains the largest number of courts in the area, so it was perfect to kick-start the Wallyball comeback! Wallyball at the Athletic Club means  fun for...

Racquetball Chicks! Join Coach Lucy’s Ladies Only Racquetball Clinic in Kansas City!

When I say the word Racquetball do you picture a man wearing a sweatband and matching socks? Well women play too, and we’re proud to say there’s a racquetball clinic in Kansas City designed solely for the ladies. It’s a fun sport, and a great way to get active, but for some reason some people may be reluctant to join in and play. Have you seen the movie Along Came Polly with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller? It’s a charming love story, but there’s an amusing scene where Ben Stiller is invited to play a game of racquetball with his overzealous boss. Needless to say, Mr. Stiller may have enjoyed himself a little more if he had been paired with...
