Food As Medicine

Did you know that food can be used as natural medicine to help alleviate inflammation and pain?

Sports, jobs, and the activities of daily living can cause inflammation and pain.  Inflammation is the body’s natural response when viruses and bacteria invade our immune system. Pharmaceuticals such as aspirin and ibuprofen have unwanted side effects and there are number of potions on the market that make claims to help alleviate our pain and suffering. However, in reality food is medicine. There are certain foods that can eliminate the threat of viruses or bacteria to our muscles and joints.


Here is a list of food that can prevent inflammation and alleviate pain:

Eggs: Eggs contain choline, which can help diminish inflammation

Oysters: Contain copper, zinc and manganese, which help quell damage to the body cells

Salmon: Omega 3s, found in salmon, help lubricate tight joints

Dark Chocolate: A square a day of this delicious treat contains a protein that lowers inflammation

Tart cherries: Compounds that give cherries their ruby red hue are powerful antioxidants that stomp out pain just like aspirin and ibuprofen

Pineapples: Bromelain, which is found in pineapples, is a enzyme that helps with swelling symptoms from carpal tunnel

Apples:  Quercetin is the antioxidant in comp.

Green and Black Tea: Full of flavonoids with strong anti inflammatory properties. Swap coffee for tea and try to sip four cups a day. Green tea contains quercetin, a powerful antioxidant.

Fatty Red Meats



Processed cured meats

Excessive alcohol consumption (although not a food)

Vegetable oil

Food additives, such as MSG and aspartame, which have been linked to aggravating symptoms
