Kate Hashman – an inspiration to us all at Kansas City Fitness Center TAC:
Kate Hashman is 83 years young, a TAC member of 6 years, and fabulous!
Kate began running when she was 41 after the birth of her last child. She has run 13 marathons including the Boston Marathon when she was 58. She comes to The Athletic Club five days a week, does group fitness classes, and runs 2 miles. She loves the camaraderie with fellow members, the Group Fitness Classes, and the instructors. She knows that when she comes in that she will always be surrounded by friends.
When Kate doesn’t exercise she just feels like “blah”! Even when she goes on vacation she stays active by walking and doing some weight exercises on her own. Kate has friends her age, but they all have to use walkers. She has been telling them for years “Just get up and walk!” They definitely wish that they could be more like Kate.
Kate’s advice is to start out easy, maybe just five minutes a day and build up. She feels it is important to listen to your body and don’t do too much too quickly. She doesn’t take any medications and attributes her excellent health to exercise and eating a healthy diet: she starts every day off with a bowl of steel cut oats and a banana; she eats a lot of fruits and vegetables, some chicken and not very much red meal; she says it’s very important to drink lots of water and stay hydrated. Kate is an inspiration to us all!
