As it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you may be curious if there are things you can do to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. Well, while you have no control over your genetics, there are a few other things you do have some control over!
1: Diet and exercise- Studies show that maintaining a healthy body weight can reduce your risk not only for breast cancer, but also for various diseases. The best way to maintain a healthy body weight is through proper diet and regular exercise.
2. Limit your intake of alcohol- That’s a tough one! You may have heard that a small amount of alcohol can be good for your heart. However, data from the American Cancer Society shows that drinking 2-5 drinks a day can increase your risk for developing breast cancer 1 1/2 times.
3. Having a child- There are studies that show women have a decreased risk of developing breast cancer if they have a child before they reach 30 years old.
4. Know the warning signs- While not everyone experiences the same signs, there are some common signs to be on the lookout for. Discuss changes you have noticed with your physician. Monthly self-exams are also a good idea.
5. Get screened- Talk to your physician about when and how often you should get screened for breast cancer. It will depend on your age and if you are at a higher risk for developing breast cancer.
